Description

Super rad 80’s nostalgia all around, an absolute blast to drive. Daily driver, mechanically solid. Relatively low miles to be almost 40 years old. All lights work as they should, including pop ups. Our Take:
  • Pioneering Mid-Engine Layout: The 1986 Toyota MR2 showcased the innovative mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive setup—a design that was pretty daring for its time, especially from a manufacturer known more for practicality than performance. It gave drivers a sports car experience with the agility and balance often reserved for European brands, making it a cult favorite among enthusiasts.
  • '80s Pop-Up Headlight Charm: Those pop-up headlights weren't just a design quirk; they epitomize the '80s automotive aesthetic. The fact that they still work on this model adds to its nostalgic charm. Let's be honest, who doesn't get a little thrill from watching those lights smoothly emerge from the hood?
  • Automatic Transmission Rarity: While purists might scoff at the automatic transmission, it's a relatively rare choice in the world of MR2s, where manuals dominate. The automatic shifts smoothly, a testament to its enduring engineering—and gives us a glimpse into Toyota's attempt to broaden the MR2's appeal at the time.
  • Collector's Potential: With many MR2s from this era being either heavily modified or left to decay, finding one like this in near-original, well-preserved condition is like spotting a unicorn. The seller's note about sourcing original parts shows a commitment to maintaining its authenticity, something that could appeal to collectors and nostalgic drivers alike.
