Description

Hard to find SONETT III in very good condition. All work done has been to keep it as original as possible. This has been a DESERT CAR for at least the last 40 yrs so no rust problems. The underside pictures show some minor surface rust for a 50 yr old car. Very solid! The fiberglass body is in great shape except for two small areas that have some damage (see pictures). No cracking. The paint has minor chips but overall looks good. The interior is very clean. New headliner, dash and door p...

Our Take:
  • Rarity and Production: The Saab Sonett III is a rare find, especially in such good condition. Produced between 1970 and 1974, fewer than 8,400 units were made. It was the last iteration of the Sonett line, which means this 1974 model is part of the final production year—a significant factor for collectors.
  • Fiberglass Body: Saab's clever use of fiberglass for the body was intended to keep the car lightweight and agile. It's interesting to note that, while rust can plague many cars from this era, your Sonett's fiberglass panels mean it's mostly immune, except for the steel undercarriage. The fact that this one's a "desert car" solidifies its rust-free status—music to any restorer's ears.
  • Quirky Mechanics: Equipped with a manual transmission, the Sonett III also featured a peculiar "freewheeling" mechanism. Saab, always the innovator, included this feature to improve fuel economy, letting the car coast without engine drag. Your listing mentions the freewheeling works, although the linkage rod is missing; lucky for you, enthusiasts often view such quirks as part of a Sonett's charm.
  • Cultural Impact: In its day, the Sonett III represented Saab's attempt to break into the American sports car market. While it didn’t entirely succeed in usurping the likes of the Corvette, it did carve out a niche for itself as a quirky, yet lovable underdog with its unique styling and Scandinavian flair. Driving one of these around isn't just about the car—it's about owning a piece of an ambitious automotive chapter.
