Up for sale is this classic 1972 BMW 2002 featuring the sought-after round taillights;. The car is beautifully finished in Riviera Blue. Under the hood, you'll find a spirited 2.0-liter M10 inline-four engine, enhanced with dual Weber side-draft carburetors for an exhilarating driving experience. The car has been upgraded with a five-speed manual transmission, replacing the original automatic unit, providing a more engaging ride.
Inside, the seats have been professionally reupholstered in sleek black vinyl with sueded inserts, offering both comfort and style. Notable features include round taillights, 13” steel wheels, and a sunroof, creating an attractive overall look.
The car’s exterior was repainted in the late 2010s, with bodyside moldings removed to enhance its clean profile. Chrome bumpers with overriders, pop-out rear windows, and the sunroof add to its vintage charm. Please note, the doors do not have keys, and there is some corrosion on the left rocker panel.
The BMW rides on 13” steel wheels fitted with 175/70 Douglas Xtra-Trac A/W tires in front and 185/70 Kumho Solus tires in the rear. Replacement struts and Eibach springs have been added, and the rear brake drums and shoes were changed in July 2021. The seller has mentioned that the steering has a loose feel.
The interior also features a three-spoke steering wheel framing VDO instrumentation, including a 120-mph speedometer, tachometer, and combination gauge. While the dashboard has some cracks, the horn was recently repaired in 2024. The five-digit odometer currently shows 18k miles, but total mileage remains unknown.
Mechanically, the M10 engine is well-maintained with recent work including a new throttle cable, alternator, fuel pump, starter, battery, and spark plugs completed in 2023. An oil change has been performed in preparation for sale, although there is an intermittent rubbing sound worth noting.
Previously, the factory three-speed automatic transmission was replaced with a five-speed unit sourced from an E21 320i. The automatic transmission brackets were removed in July 2021, and the rear section of the exhaust has been replaced. Some corrosion is visible on various underbody components.
This BMW 2002 comes with spare parts, providing you with a great opportunity to own a classic that's both fun to drive and full of character. It has a clean California title in my name.
