Sadly It is time to sell Little Inga.
This is "cult car" adored by enthusiasts and appreciating in value. Collectors welcome.
Purchased in 1993 for $2002 by my wife, this 1976 BMW 2002 was a daily driver for 3 years. Our initial investment was a new clutch, guibo, and reupholstered front seats. Then babies came. She was stored inside my mother‘s heated garage for about 17 years. In 2021 after my mother passed, we took some of my inheritance and had the car mechanically restored. This included the following:
New alternator.
Pedal box rebuild.
New clutch slave cylinder
Tie rod ends
Emergency brake restore
Brake pads all around
Brake system flush
New radiator
New hoses
New Webber 32/36 carburetor
Electronic ignition
New plugs and plug wires
New valve cover gasket
New engine mounts
New rear shocks
K and N air cleaner.
New stainless steel performance exhaust (header back)
Custom car cover
Newer battery.
Blaupunkt Speakers under the dash (Working Period Correct Radio)
The car comes with many extra parts, including the original carburetor, original 13 inch steel wheels with chrome trim rings and fresh center roundels with Michelin front and vrederStein snow tires Five BBS basketweave style wheels with four Firestone tires included
Inga’s imperfections include
Rust at the forward jack points that will require some modest fabrication, welding, [Front Floor Pans still intact], but is non-functional if yo carry a scissors jack (the only rust on the vehicle of any significance is there and a hole on the lower front valance under the bumper. All shock towers are solid.) There is also a small spot or two of bubbled paint at the tip of one of the doors
Inga also has several small dents on the sheet metal and moldings which are from careless tenants in my mother‘s garage who stored items next to or on the covered vehicle.
The rear trunk lid roundel should be replaced.
Speedometer (Easy fix just not impotant) and internal turn dash signal indicator do not work. (all lights and turn signals work! ) FACTORY air conditioning has been left installed with the belt cut to the compressor; Driver seat back does not detach to lean forward; Rear seat was not refreshed when we reupholstered the forward seats (in tan oem vinyl) Windshield washers do not work, although all original equipment is still intact Wipers work fine. Cassette player does not work.
80,000 miles on the odometer but unsure what the actual mileage is; likely closer to 100,000 as odometer does not work no more than 2500 miles since restoration.
She has been a Fairweather car for the last five years and only run on beautiful days.
Inga runs well especially when driven regularly. After sitting for several weeks the mechanical fuel pump takes time to bring fuel to the carburetor, but she will eventually start unusually the third crank. the new carburetor fast idle speed needs to be set up as the motor runs slow slowly when cold eventually getting to a normal idle speed of 800 RPMs. Then it's game on.
There is modest play in the steering, which was improved when the tie rod ends were replaced; the center tie rod and should be replaced, but was not available at the time the work was done.
All receipts and service records will be available.
SHE LOVES TO RUN; BUY HER AND DRIVE'R.
Everything else works as expected, and this car is a joy to drive, especially in temperate weather when you can open the manual sunroof and window vents forward and back. The 14 inch wheels and oversize tires enable the car to travel at 70 miles an hour at under 4000 RPMs; however, the large tires do scrape slightly against the inside of the front fenders when the vehicle is driven over a bump while turning.
Working "period -correct" a.m. FM stereo but you'll want to hear the sound of the exhaust, especially when you open the second barrel of the Weber. 4 Speed tranny is sound.
Vehicle is all original with no modifications other than as described.
My thinking is the car is worth $15k and I welcome SERIOUS offers at, close or above there. IF you are the right buyer, you won't ask for more pictures or whether she is still available- you'll simply come and drive her. We don't need or really want to sell her, yet we have a college student and I don't need to say more. No surprises here. Thanks for reading.
