Description

Price is FIRM. 1973 BMW Bavaria · Sedan · Driven 102,000 miles Sad to sell my ‘73 Bavaria. Bought with high hopes of driving it, but need to sell to fund my move back east. Originally a carbureted automatic. Bought a good running L-jet engine and 4 speed from a member years back (gave it a new clutch and resurfaced flywheel), and after a couple shops efforts, it ran! Then I got it home and it never ran. Very straight, very structurally sound- only surface rust. Original owner was a pilot and...

Our Take:
  • The 1973 BMW Bavaria is a rather interesting piece of automotive history. Initially designed as a more affordable version of the luxury sedans like the 3.0S, it offered a unique blend of performance and practicality at the time. For many, it was a no-frills entry into BMW’s famed driving experience, focusing on essentials rather than luxury.
  • This model was originally equipped with a carbureted engine and an automatic transmission, providing a leisurely drive. However, the current setup has been swapped for an L-jet engine coupled with a manual 4-speed transmission—a choice likely aimed at enhancing the driving engagement and performance typical of the BMW name. It's quite the transformation if you think about it!
  • Having been parked since 1980 due to overheating issues, this Bavaria remained a garage queen for nearly four decades. The fact that it's structurally sound with only surface rust speaks volumes about its condition despite being a half-century old. Thanks to its first owner being a pilot, it seems to have enjoyed some special treatment during its early years.
  • The car comes with spare wheels, a rear subframe, trailing arms, and almost-complete tool kit—many enthusiasts would appreciate such extras. Although it doesn't run at the moment (thanks to a suspected faulty DME), these additional parts could be quite appealing to those who enjoy spending weekends tinkering with their classic cars. Isn’t that part of the charm of owning a vintage BMW like this?
