Description

1991 Bertone 780 “Coupe”. White with solid black interior, so great color combo. Original paint except the right front fender looks to have had a minor repair (has clear coat and it's peeling off). No rust. Project car. Needs a motor and I’m sure other stuff now after sitting for 15+ years. Motor is there, but has been sitting with the head off this entire time so it would need at the very least a complete rebuild. Probably easier to just throw another motor at it. Our Take:
  • Rarity Factor: The 1991 Volvo 780 is a rare breed, especially in the U.S. market. Designed by the renowned Italian design house Bertone, the 780 was Volvo's last rear-wheel-drive luxury coupe. It's rare to find one—especially in this condition, requiring a whole new engine. Enthusiasts appreciate its unique blend of Swedish reliability and Italian flair.
  • Historical Significance: This car represents a collaboration between Volvo and Bertone, aiming for a slice of the luxury coupe segment in the late '80s and early '90s. Its design marked a departure from the typically boxy Volvo aesthetics of the time, which might give you a chuckle considering the brand's typical styling choices. If you appreciate a car that tells a story of ambitious cross-continental partnership, this one's for you.
  • Potential Project: With this 780 being a “project car,” there's room for some creative restoration or customization. The mention of a V8 swap hints at a popular mod among car enthusiasts—bringing American muscle into a Swedish-Italian chassis. It's like giving a cat the heart of a lion, making purrs into roars.
  • Condition Insights: While the exterior boasts original paint, the right front fender's clear coat is peeling—this might make perfectionists cringe, but it's part of its lived-in charm. With no rust (a real unicorn trait for an older car in any climate), it's got a solid foundation for someone who's handy with a wrench or looking for a unique collector’s piece.
