Our Take:
  • Merkur's brief but impactful run: The Merkur XR4Ti, a unique slice of automotive history, was part of Ford's ambitious attempt to introduce European performance to the American market. Produced from 1985 to 1989, these cars are rare sights today, especially considering the model's relatively short production lifespan. It catered to enthusiasts who appreciated European handling and styling nuances that were quite different from American norms of the time.
  • Sibling to famed performers: The XR4Ti shares its robust 2.3-liter turbocharged engine with the Ford Mustang SVO, a model respected for its advanced engineering and spirited performance. This engine, paired with a manual transmission, makes the car a delight for those who enjoy an engaging driving experience. The mention of performance upgrades—like the Cosworth-style intercooler and high flow exhaust—hints at potential for even greater thrills.
  • Quirks and character: With its body repainted and a bit of rust developing, the XR4Ti has its share of age-related blemishes, telling tales of a life well-lived. Issues like the intermittent gauges and the heater core removal are part of the charm that comes with owning a vintage car. It's like inviting an eccentric but fascinating guest into your garage; there's always something to tinker with or restore.
  • Bringing European flair to American roads: The XR4Ti stands out with its distinct bi-plane rear spoiler and aerodynamic styling, a nod to its European Ford Sierra ancestry. It wasn't unusual for this Merkur to turn heads back in the day and it’s no different now—it's bound to attract attention from fellow road-goers and car enthusiasts alike, who may just give you a knowing nod at the next traffic light.
