Description

BLAST FROM THE PAST!! 1986 Merkur XR4ti. Built in Germany and sold in the US at Ford and Mercury Dealers. Powered by the 2.3L Inline 4 cylinder with a TURBO! Currently it does not drive, I am told the transmission is out. Power comes on, I have not tried to start it. I just recently got this beast. I lost my garage and so I’m listing it to see if anyone is interested. If not, it’ll be my winter project. Has been outside for years. Has sap spots all over it. I’ll work on that later and shine it...

Our Take:
  • Mysterious Merkur: The Merkur XR4Ti is something of a unicorn—produced for only five years in the U.S., from 1985 to 1989. Originally designed by Ford's European arm and marketed under Mercury in the States, this car brought a bit of European flair to American soil. It's almost like finding a rare Euro-import hiding in plain sight.
  • Turbocharged Potential: Under the hood, you'll find a turbocharged 2.3L Inline 4, similar to what powered the Ford Mustang SVO. It's the kind of engine that’s whispered about in car enthusiast circles—lighter, with plenty of room for performance modifications. Imagine it as a sleeper project, waiting to roar back to life.
  • RWD Dynamics: With its rear-wheel-drive setup, the XR4Ti promised spirited driving dynamics reminiscent of its German counterparts, like the BMW 3 Series. The Merkur was a bit of a rebel, blending Ford’s reliability with the handling finesse expected from a European chassis. It’s like having a Bavarian performance vehicle with a blue oval badge.
  • Condition and Restoration: The car's current state—non-running with a taken-apart steering column and exterior blemishes—paints it as a canvas for restoration. Even with its challenges, the relatively intact interior is a nod to its durability. For someone with the time and passion, it's a potential diamond in the rough—kind of like finding a classic vinyl at a thrift shop, waiting for a good spin.
