Description

Hi, I have a very cool 1964 Studebaker Avanti for sale. Studebaker 289 V8 with automatic transmission, original except for the Moon hubcaps. It's in good vintage condition, has been taken care of and maintained all of its life. Odometer shows 19,000 miles, so it's probably got 119k miles on it. Very well preserved! If you are seriously interested, please message me and you are welcome to come by and check it out. No trades. FCFS. Thanks, Mike ...

Our Take:
  • Historical Significance: The Studebaker Avanti was a bold experiment by the struggling automaker back in the '60s—conceived as America’s answer to European performance cars. With its radical design by Raymond Loewy, it certainly stood out on the roads and remains a symbol of daring automotive innovation. Only around 4,600 units were produced in 1964, so every surviving example is a piece of automotive history.
  • Design and Performance: Under the hood, the Avanti's Studebaker 289 V8 was quite the powerhouse for its time. Paired with an automatic transmission, it offered a balance of performance and drivability that was both sporty and civilized. This was one of the first American production cars to feature front disc brakes—cutting-edge tech in its era!
  • Preservation and Condition: The seller’s mention of the vehicle being “original except for the Moon hubcaps” is like music to a classic car enthusiast's ears. Originality often boosts a car’s desirability, especially when it's in “good vintage condition.” Considering its age, having 119,000 miles on the odometer isn't excessive, suggesting it's been well-loved and maintained.
  • Cultural Impact: The Avanti was more than just a car; it sparked a cult following. Its unique design made it a staple in pop culture, appearing in films and TV shows. Even after Studebaker ceased operation, its allure persisted, with various attempts to revive the model under different marques in later years. Isn’t it fascinating how a car can outlive its manufacturer?
