Description

This 70’s USDM Toyota Corolla Liftback Deluxe sport wagon is a clean, mostly complete, little survivor with original “mini-Hemi” 2TC engine, 3-speed AT and RWD. I originally purchased it in 2019 from a collector from SA and turn it into a daily driver / weekend cruiser with EFI conversion during COVID lockdown. The car is mostly stock and complete with the exception of EFI conversion and its related fuel line, intake + exhaust manifold and other cosmetic upgrades. Start on first turn and alwa...

Our Take:
  • Historical Context: The 1978 Toyota Corolla Liftback Deluxe sport wagon is part of the third generation of Corollas, which were known for their durability and simplicity. These cars were a hit in the post-oil crisis era, thanks to their fuel efficiency and reliability—traits that made them popular across the globe, not just in the U.S. They were considered economical back then, but today, they've become charming reminders of '70s automotive engineering.
  • Engine Details: This model features the "mini-Hemi" 2TC engine, a 1.6-liter inline-four that was known for its robust performance despite its small displacement. The "mini-Hemi" nickname comes from the engine's hemispherical combustion chambers, reminiscent of Chrysler's iconic Hemi engines. It’s an interesting choice for enthusiasts who appreciate that mix of efficiency and a touch of muscle-car flair.
  • Unique Modifications: The seller has performed a Holley Sniper EFI conversion, which is a modern twist to the classic. This electronic fuel injection system offers reliability and improved fuel efficiency compared to the original carburetor setup. While purists might raise an eyebrow at modifications, this upgrade actually enhances the driving experience, making it a practical cruiser with a nod to modern convenience.
  • Cultural and Nostalgic Appeal: With period-correct Watanabe wheels and a rare Shadow rear window louver, this Corolla appeals to those who appreciate vintage aesthetics. These touches, combined with its clean black cloth and vinyl interior, make it a canvas for nostalgia—a trip back to the late '70s when rock music was on the radio and cars were all about character. Plus, having documentation like an original letter from the City of Dallas adds an extra layer of historical intrigue.
