Description

This was originally a father son project that never really got off the ground. The car ran and drove for about a month whenever I bought it but after a small section of wire turned to ash it was decided to rewire the whole car, so it was taken apart and didn't quite make it back together. Shortly after that it was backed into, the damage is shown in the photos. There is some rust on the doors and in the bumper corner. The headlight is the worst spot on the car. This car was put on the sidelines ...

Our Take:
  • Rare Sports Car Roots: The 1971 Opel GT is often dubbed the "mini-Corvette" due to its sleek and sporty design. Produced by General Motors under the Opel brand, it was manufactured between 1968 and 1973, making finding one in any condition a bit like stumbling upon a hidden gem in a barn. It’s quite the conversation starter, especially among those who appreciate the era's unique European flair.
  • Design and Quirks: One of the most charming features of the Opel GT is its pop-up headlights, which don't simply flip—oh no, they rotate (pretty nifty for its time, don't you think?). The design was ahead of its time, with influences from its American cousins while maintaining that European compact spirit. Despite the current state of this particular GT, its original innovative design remains noteworthy.
  • Performance and Mechanics: Sporting a 1.9-liter engine and originally paired with a manual transmission, the Opel GT offered a delightful driving experience. Although this unit's engine setup seems to have been adjusted for more modern tastes, it’s worth noting that the GT was known for its lively acceleration and nimble handling—qualities that enthusiasts cherish despite its unconventional path.
  • Community and Enthusiasts: There's a tight-knit community around the Opel brand—referred to by the seller as "opelers"—which shows a level of passion and camaraderie that goes beyond mere car ownership. If you're thinking about diving into the world of classic cars, the support and shared enthusiasm among Opel fans could be invaluable as you restore this project car back to its former glory.
