Description

For sale is my 1983 BMW 533i. Alpine white over red leather. California car for most of its life, I purchased the car in 2015. It has been used seasonally since I have owned it, very clean, not a rusty Northeastern car. Runs and drives great, extremely fun to drive. It currently has 269,335 miles on it. It has a 3.5-liter M30B35 inline 6 from a later E34 swapped in, a Getrag 260 5-speed manual and a 3.73 limited-slip diff that was rebuilt by the previous owner, I had the engine put in in 2020...

Our Take:
  • Rare Model in the E28 Lineup: The 533i was only produced for the North American market from 1983 to 1984, making it one of the rarer versions of the E28 series. It bridged the gap between the earlier, simpler models and the more powerful and luxurious ones that followed. For BMW enthusiasts, this model stands out as an intriguing chapter in the 5 Series timeline.
  • Engine Swap and Performance Mods: The original 3.2-liter M30 engine has been swapped for a 3.5-liter M30B35 from a later E34, providing more power and responsiveness. Coupled with the Getrag 260 5-speed manual transmission and a 3.73 limited-slip differential, this car promises a driving experience that's both engaging and true to BMW's "Ultimate Driving Machine" legacy.
  • California Heritage and Maintenance: Having lived most of its life in California, this car has avoided the rust issues common in many northeastern vehicles. The seller's maintenance efforts, including significant suspension upgrades and regular mechanical updates, suggest that this 533i has been cared for with a keen enthusiast's eye.
  • Classic Meets Modern Aesthetic: The addition of Euro bumpers, grilles, and headlights, combined with performance upgrades like the BBS RC090 Style 5 wheels and ceramic coated headers, gives this 533i a blend of classic and contemporary appeal. It's a nod to the era when you could still personalize a BMW with authentic European parts straight from the dealership.
