Description

82 380sl. I have known this car since it was 2 years old. I purchased it about 6 years ago from the 2nd owner who bought it used at the dealership when it was 2 years old. At some point the engine was replaced by our local Mercedes mechanic. I put new tires on it and drove it about 6 months before the infamous mercedes timing chain broke a plastic guide. A new timing chain ($800) has been installed but when it started it ran rough. The car has around 120k miles .The mechanic said the valves are...

Our Take:
  • Classic Roadster Style: The 1982 Mercedes-Benz 380SL is a quintessential embodiment of the classic roadster design. Known for its elegant lines and robust build, the R107 series, to which this model belongs, was produced between 1971 and 1989—making it one of the longest-running models in Mercedes history. It's the kind of car that turns heads even when parked under a shade tree, perhaps sipping a cappuccino in a leisurely European town square.
  • Infamous Timing Chain Issue: The 380SL's engine, a 3.8-liter V8, was notorious for its single-row timing chain's susceptibility to issues—something Mercedes later corrected in newer versions. This car has already had the timing chain replaced, though there are still lingering valve concerns. It's a perfect example of how enthusiasts must sometimes balance passion with patience, especially when dealing with these vintage machines.
  • Rich Ownership History: This particular car boasts a colorful past, being under the care of only a few owners. Knowing a car almost personally, as the seller has since it was nearly new, adds a rich tapestry of stories (and sometimes mysteries) that only a well-lived vehicle can offer. It's like finding an old family friend with tales yet to be uncovered.
  • Extra Features and Accessories: The inclusion of a new German soft top and the original hardtop with new seals is a significant plus. This SL is more than just a fair-weather friend; it's ready for a jaunt under the summer sun or a snug cruise in cooler weather. Such attention to detail in preservation can mean a lot to collectors who value authenticity and completeness in a classic car.
