Description

1982 AMC Eagle Sundancer · Convertible · Driven 999,999 miles This is one of the most, if not the most documented Sundancer in existence. This car has an engine knock, needs paint, tires, & needs the speedometer fixed. The fiberglass targa top is there but needs tightened up and repaired. The folding top is near mint. It is unknown if the 4 wheel drive system works, but the transfer case was replaced. There has been a ton of mechanical work done since I saved it from the crusher, including all ...

Our Take:
  • Rarity and Obscureness: The AMC Eagle Sundancer is truly a rare find, especially for an '82 model. AMC, or American Motors Corporation, was known for creating quirky and innovative cars during its time, and the Eagle was a pioneer, being one of the first crossover vehicles with its unique combination of 4WD and car-like features. Sundancer was an aftermarket conversion by Griffith, making this convertible version even less common—practically a unicorn among enthusiasts.
  • Historical Significance: The Eagle line marked the early days of the crossover vehicle trend, long before everyone and their grandmother drove SUVs. At the time, it was an unusual mishmash of family sedan and rugged capability, showing AMC’s forward-thinking approach during the waning years of the company. The 1982 Sundancer, specifically, represents a time when automakers were experimenting with versatile designs to capture various market niches.
  • Collector’s Interest: While it’s got an engine knock and plenty of other quirks, this Sundancer has been documented extensively, which is a goldmine for collectors. The fact that it got saved from the crusher adds a touch of romantic drama to its story. It’s had more than just a facelift; it’s been pieced back together with love—making it a potential prize for the right kind of collector who values its story as much as its wheels.
  • Unique Features: Besides its convertible allure, the vehicle features a fiberglass targa top and folding top, which are increasingly rare to find in nearly mint condition. The model's 4WD system, though currently in questionable working order, was a standout feature at its inception. Given its mileage and the level of work done from mechanical repairs to interior updates, this Eagle has definitely led a full life, embodying both resilience and the classic charm of AMC’s adventurous spirit.
