Description

Up for sale is my 1949 Packard Standard 8. It has the 288 which starts up with no issues. I began restoring the car, but just ran out of time to work on it. A 12 volt conversion was started which is why you will see light switches under the steering wheel (to give power directly to the starter and coil and bypass all other 6v systems). The car starts on this system every time although it has been sitting for some months now. The car definitely needs some work, but will make for a great project. ...

Our Take:
  • Historic Significance: The 1949 Packard Standard 8 represents an era when Packard was still considered a leader in luxury American automobiles, just before the company's decline in the 1950s. This model is particularly valued by enthusiasts for its classic lines and the legendary durability of the straight-eight engine.
  • Engine and Mechanics: The 288 cubic inch inline eight engine in this model was renowned for its smoothness and reliability. It's the kind of motor that, despite sitting idle as described, can often be coaxed back to life - a testament to its robust engineering.
  • Rarity and Restoration Potential: While not the rarest of Packards, the Standard 8 is becoming increasingly scarce, especially in a restorable condition like this one. The 12-volt conversion is a practical touch, offering a starting point for modern updates without losing the car's classic character.
  • Cultural Reference: Packard cars often evoke images of post-war America, a time of optimism and change. Driving a piece of history like this connects you to a bygone era when things were built to last and design was an art form.
