Selling my 1974 Hurst/Olds that I originally bought around 1985. Please pardon its dirty condition. Clear Florida title car. The car is in very nice condition, but is not a show car. The body is straight, the paint is new, the vinyl top is excellent, the engine is new (350 4V zero miles, about 2 hours run time). I have been working on it most of that time trying to make it into my dream car. I pretty much succeeded in that goal, but 2 storage changes in 2 years have forced me to put her up for sale.
The car was born a 350 dual exhaust H/O, but a previous owner had put a 455 in her when I bought her. A planned trip out west caused me to put a 350 back in her, but only after deciding to make her look like a W-30. To that end, I installed the correct 15X7" bolt-on center rims that were only used for the '74 W-30. I added the Dual Gate shifter, found a dual snorkel air filter assy, and was able to get a set of W-30 grilles as well as a set of NOS fenders for that no emblem holes look. All of these are highly desirable, and some are unobtainium.
Interior wise, I purchased NOS seat material and had the seats redone. The foam has collapsed a little. The carpet was also replaced in the late 90's and is excellent. The car has always been stored indoors, and is aging very gracefully as a result. I added the tilt column, the U-21 gage package, PDL and PW. The doors and the door panels are excellent. The dash is perfect. I even added an NOS Oldsmobile emblem for the dash. The radio is a Rockford Fosgate unit with a 10 CD changer in the trunk, running off a pair of Fosgate amps. The speakers are 3.5" coax in the dash,6X9 coax in the rear and (2) 12" woofers in the rear deck.
Exterior wise, the grilles are like new, the bumper fillers are very good with no rot. I have used so many NOS items on this car, I really can't remember them all. There are no rust bubbles anywhere. All brightwork is the best I could find. I used the 1973 stainless quarter window trim instead of the mylar because of the durability and the extra wow factor. I was going to have the cuts I had to make to fit them welded in, so they would look custom. The vinyl top was done around 2000, and is still excellent. This is a testament to its indoor storage status. The gas door filler is a little warped, so it sometimes drops into the notch. The doors close solidly, with a hand on it, the trunk closes easily. The front edge of the drivers door needs to be cleaned up.
Mechanically, most everything works great the engine is new, the radiator is a 4 core model, most of the brake system is new, but more on that later. The A/C compressor was a new unit, but when I installed it, I used nitrogen to keep the system clean and never evacuated it and installed freon to use it. There is an Edelbrock intake manifold on it and headers. The car starts and runs beautifully. There is a 2.73:1 posi rear at the rear, and the exhaust uses Magnaflow mufflers. The gas tank and sending unit are new and work excellent.
Now for the "in progress" part. The biggest issue with the car currently is that the brakes do not perform as they should. We replaced the booster, the master cylinder the front hoses this year. All new front and rear brake parts were replaced previously. We are in the investigation phase on that. The car did have rust when I bought her, and most never returned when I had it painted in the 90's. The floorboards were repaired but not professionally. Again, no rust seems to have made any comeback. The shifter cable needs to be adjusted as the pawl does not fully engage. The cable died on me last month, but I had a spare. The fender stripes need to be added or painted on.
Work is continuing on the car, so issues will be checked off as I can get to them. Over the years, I have taken this car to 4 Hurst/Olds Club of America meets, and won 3 "Driven farthest" awards for 1,800-1,900 mile round trips. I would feel more comfortable doing a trip like that in the current version of the car.
