Our Take:
  • Unique Kei Car Charm: The 1998 Subaru Sambar is a kei car, a category unique to Japan known for its compact size and efficiency. Famous for its versatility, this model's full-time 4WD capability and supercharged engine make it stand out even among kei cars. If you're a fan of Japanese domestic market (JDM) rides, owning an imported right-hand drive (RHD) Sambar can be quite an exciting experience.
  • Rally Heritage Connection: Although the Sambar wasn't designed as a rally car, Subaru's legacy in rally racing and its expertise with all-wheel-drive systems certainly trickled down to their kei vehicles. Imagine a tiny van that borrows from the same DNA as those Subaru beasts dominating the rally circuits! It’s like having a little piece of rally history in your garage.
  • Continued Maintenance and Parts: The seller mentions ongoing maintenance with parts sourced from Japan, signaling dedication to keeping this Japanese gem in tip-top shape. While this dedication is admirable, it’s a reminder that owning such a unique vehicle might require patience as parts come from overseas; but hey, rare finds are worth the wait, right?
  • Rust Considerations: Yes, rust can be daunting, whether you're looking at a classic car or a quirky kei van. But rust on bumper supports is often more aesthetic than structural and can be easier to fix—a chance for DIY enthusiasts to flex their welding skills. It’s the kind of project that could pair well with a summer of adventures, just as the seller suggests.
