For sale is our four-stroke V4 (!) 1973 Saab 96 with a clean Kansas title in my name. Selling because I have another Swedish car demanding my attention.
About:
- Last year ever sold in America!
- A four-on-the-tree (yes, 4!) transmission, paired to a West German-made Ford V4
- It's like a Saab Sonnett, but less cool. Or more cool. I don't know.
- Original wheels, engine, transmission, and body. Some paint respray occurred at some point.
- Runs and drives just fine - if you live in KC, you'll be fine driving this home.
What's working well:
- The engine + transmission work very well. Compression is strong. The carburetor works well, even if cold. All required safety lights work great. The brakes work OK.
- I've driven this car a pretty high number of miles since I got it, and it will hit 90MPH, although I probably wouldn't recommend it for long.
- The engine doesn't overheat when driving, although it will get hot in the summer time or if idling too long, so be warned.
- The clutch was replaced last year, I have receipts for this. Some other clean-up work was done at-cost by the shop we purchased this from in Florida.
- The frame is in good shape - it's definitely been bumped in a parking lot, but there are no signs of major collisions during its lifetime.
- All (original?) glass is present, nothing's been shimmed in place or anything. The paint is mostly in decent shape - some fading in spots you might expect of a vehicle from the 70s.
- I also purchased new tires last year - I've lost that receipt from my folder, although I can show you the tire codes.
What needs work/worth mentioning
- There are a fair amount of small rust spots throughout the car. None of them are structurally critical, but you should be aware that the windowsills near the windshield are experiencing rust in a way that is notable and will likely not be an easy repair.
- The undertray of the car is in actually pretty good shape. An under spray (unsure if from factory or not?) is still present, although it is flaky. It has successfully prevented major frame rust or damage. The wheel wheels and critical suspension points do not have rust at all (see pictures.)
- Brakes could use a bleed. There is some veer to the right when locking brakes.
- There is a very notable exhaust leak, so it smells like exhaust and is pretty dang loud. Sounds great, though.
- Other: the interior lights do not currently work, there is no radio, it runs a little rich.
- The interior is in OK shape - the headliner doesn't sag, and there are door panels, but it's a little stained due to age.
Please feel free to shoot me a message with any questions, although I may take a little time to respond.
