Our Take:
  • The 1984 Mercury Capri ASC McLaren is a rare bird indeed. It was part of a limited run of vehicles engineered as a collaboration between Mercury and American Specialty Cars (ASC), with some modifications overseen by the legendary McLaren. This partnership aimed at transforming the Capri into a European-style convertible roadster, which was quite a departure from the standard coupes of the time.
  • Only a limited number of these custom Capris were produced, which makes spotting one today almost like a sighting of Bigfoot. This model features the same high-output 5.0-liter V8 engine that found fame in the Mustang GT. Back in the '80s, this engine was the talk of the town for its balance of power and reliability.
  • The seller's description mentions that this particular car is one of three made in 1984, pointing to its unique status among a production line that already wasn't vast. This scarcity alone makes it a notable find for collectors or enthusiasts of '80s performance cars, even if its current condition could use a bit of TLC—think more barn find than showroom shine.
  • While the car hasn't been pampered in recent years, that opens the door to some interesting restoration possibilities or a bit of creative flair. With its current automatic transmission and some basic mechanical updates, it feels like a project car with potential. And let's not forget those pony wheels—it nods to its Mustang cousin while carving out its own identity on the road.
