Description

1970 Fiat 500L. I love this car but it is time to hand it over to someone that can care for it and enjoy it. I have too many old cars and this one has been sitting for a year. I did a full restoration about 10 years ago which included the engine and transmission at Alpha Italia in Burbank. I redid the body work and removed any rust and repaired the metal. The car runs and starts but putters off as it needs a carb cleaning. Everything works and it drives like a charm. This car gets a lot of atten...

Our Take:
  • The Fiat 500L of 1970 is a charming icon of automotive history, representing the last of the classic "Nuova 500" series that began in 1957. Known for its adorable design and practicality, this car became a symbol of Italy’s economic revival post-World War II. It’s a car that turns heads not because of its speed, but because it’s a little piece of history rolling down the road.
  • Rarity and Restoration: The restoration undertaken 10 years ago strikes a fine balance between originality and preservation—two key elements that classic car enthusiasts value highly. Having gone through a full restoration, including engine and transmission work at Alpha Italia (a well-known shop among vintage car fans), this 500L is poised for nostalgic drives with minimal mechanical surprises. It's like giving an old maestro fresh sheet music.
  • Technical Tidbit: Despite its modest 499cc engine, the 500L makes the most out of every pony it has (22 hp to be exact). The manual transmission adds to the driving fun, offering an immersive experience that modern automated gearboxes simply can’t replicate. Who knew such simplicity could deliver so much joy?
  • Popularity and Culture: The Fiat 500 is more than just a car; it’s a cultural artifact. Its compact design made it perfect for navigating the narrow streets of Europe, and its retro look remains popular even decades later. Enthusiasts often refer to these vehicles with affectionate terms like "Bambino," highlighting the emotional connection that transcends generations.
