Description

Runs great. Past smog September 2024, Odometer not working. AC works, but needs new fan speed controler. Has under paint rust (picture) driverside between sunroof and door. Have not opened the sunroof in 15 years so not sure. I'm been told this is a "grey market" vehicle brought over from Germany, so bumpers are European, and smog was changed to comply with California smog emissions regulations. Painted 4 years ago. ...

Our Take:
  • The 1985 BMW 635CSi is a classic from the E24 chassis series, which enjoyed production from 1976 to 1989. This model broke ground as a high-performance luxury coupe, intertwining sporty dynamics with grand touring comfort—perfect for those who appreciate both amiable road trips and spirited drives.
  • The mention of a "grey market" vehicle adds a layer of intrigue. Back in the '80s, enthusiasts often imported European models with unique specs—such as those European bumpers—to enjoy features that weren’t available in the U.S. models. The smog adaptation for California compliance is a nod to the car's transatlantic journey and speaks to its altered yet preserved DNA.
  • The odometer not working might deter some, but it’s a reminder of the analog days. These cars exude character; not every story is about perfection. Fixing a mechanical instrument like an odometer could be a fun project for the hands-on aficionado—akin to tuning a classic tape deck that's seen a few good parties.
  • Rust beneath the paint is a concern, especially near the sunroof. While this may require attention, it’s an opportunity to delve deeper into restoration. Think of it like restoring a vintage watch—each part tells a story and demands care. Inspecting the sunroof, which hasn't been opened in years, could reveal anything from hidden treasures to more work, and that's just part of the adventure with classic cars.
