Our Take:
  • A true piece of automotive history: The 1959 Mercedes-Benz 220S is part of the W180 series, affectionately known as the "Ponton" due to its pioneering use of the unitary construction (the "unibody" before it was cool). This model bridged the gap between pre-war and post-war designs, showcasing Mercedes-Benz's commitment to luxury and innovation during a transformative era.
  • Rarity and charm: Given that this model has been sitting since 1972, it's like a rolled-up time capsule from the swinging '60s, ready to be unraveled. The manual transmission adds an extra layer of driving purity—these days, they just don't make 'em like they used to. Any enthusiast would relish the opportunity to bring this machine roaring back to life.
  • Condition and potential: While it might need some TLC, the fact that it has no rust on the bottom is practically a miracle; German cars from this period often fell victim to rust's relentless march. The mention of "fenders where something wet sat" adds a bit of mystery--though new fenders can patch it up nicely. With the engine complete (though currently disassembled), it's a project that promises satisfaction and a sense of automotive achievement once revived.
  • Documentation and provenance: Having all the manuals from new is an absolute treasure trove for restoration enthusiasts—it’s like having the car whisper its secrets as you work. Though it lacks a title, the original tag is a key piece of its provenance puzzle, adding authenticity and a connection to its storied past.
