In the early 1990s, rally racing gave birth to high-tech, turbocharged machines, especially from the Japanese, with cars like the Mitsubishi Evo, Subaru STI and Toyota Celica GT-Four. The Escort RS Cosworth was Europe’s answer and it was a fierce competitor on both national and international rally’s, claiming it’s first victory in the 1992 Scottish Rally at the hands of Malcom Wilson.
The Escort Cosworth was just as high tech as its Asian rivals, except it had a Ford badge, which made it appear like a genuine home-team effort for European fans. This version of the Escort was, of course, not sold in America, nor was rally racing as popular west of the Atlantic ocean. But in Europe it was the textbook definition of “Win on Sunday, sell on Monday.”
This is the 5th Ford Escort RS Cosworth we’ve imported and is likely to be the last for the foreseeable future. This car has a documented history from Spain with accompanying Spanish Inspection certificates verifying kilometers. Similar mileage cars are currently selling in Europe for $100K+
This car is one of the early homologation versions and is equipped with the oversized Garrett T3/T04B Hybrid turbo (also known as the T34) which came standard with an air/water intercooler and 34/66 front/rear split all-wheel drive system. The big turbo Cossie is considered to be more collectible and was only available from 1992-1993. Polaris Silver is also more rare as this color was only available for the 1992 model year. This slick-top example is equipped with power windows, door locks and side view mirrors. This car is fully sorted and everything works as it should.
HISTORY & MAINTENANCE
Repairs and known Issues from previous owner
We acquired this vehicle from a collector in Spain who recently completed a timing belt replacement and reported the car to be in very good condition. When the car arrived there were a number of issues to be resolved which included:
• Power steering rack rebuild and re-installed
• Air conditioning compressor was rebuilt, and a new condenser was installed
• Replaced multi-plugs and a number of engine sensors
• Replaced and retrofitted washer pump
• Replaced battery
• Repaired vacuum leak
• As this car is pre-OBD we installed a DTM data monitor in place of the clock.
• Replaced aging factory shocks with adjustable SPAX struts
• Fuel pump and regulator were replaced
• All fluids including gearbox, front and rear differentials, coolant and oil were changed
• 4 wheel alignment
• In total just under $20,000 was spent getting this car fully sorted.
This vehicle is sold by my dealership, a $299 D&H fee will be added to the final sale price. Please inquire for price and details.
