Our Take:
  • The 2003 BMW M5 is part of the E39 series, a BMW generation often revered as one of the finest examples of performance sedans. This model is particularly notable for its naturally aspirated 4.9-liter V8 engine, which delivers an impressive 394 horsepower—a figure that, back in the early 2000s, was enough to make enthusiasts' hearts skip a beat. The smoothness of the V8 and its linear power delivery are still celebrated in car fan circles today.
  • A manual transmission paired with a powerful V8 engine offers a driving experience that's becoming increasingly rare in the digital age. As we veer toward automatics and dual-clutch systems, this six-speed manual has become a coveted gem among driving purists. Those who appreciate the art of heel-and-toe shifting will find joy in this mechanical symphony.
  • Despite being driven 163,000 miles, a well-maintained E39 M5 can still be a robust performer—a testament to BMW's engineering during this era. With proper maintenance, it's not uncommon for these beasts to cross the 200,000-mile mark without a sweat. Enthusiasts often say that the E39's chassis balance and road feedback create a connection between car and driver that's hard to find in modern equivalents.
  • The seller's personal history with the car—having bought, sold, and then reacquired it—hints at an emotional attachment that's not uncommon with the E39 M5. It's a car that many owners regret parting with, only to return to it later. The mention of a potential trade for a Porsche 911 turbo or a muscle car suggests a broad appreciation for both European sports cars and raw American horsepower. It's a testament to the M5's versatility and its special place in the automotive world.
