Awd and 4x4 hi and low range all work good. 4speed trans and divorced transfer case. Floors have been redone and painted, needs rear shocks and new wiring harness finished, mainly just lights and gauges. Carb could use a tune but runs, drives and stops. Have lots of spare parts and spare sets of rims and tires also everything needed to finish interior/exterior. Not in a rush to sell. Will continue to work on it as I find the time. Our Take:
  • The 1983 Lada Niva 2121 is a bit of a cult hero among off-road enthusiasts. Known for its rugged and utilitarian design, the Niva was one of the first compact SUVs to feature a unibody construction with all-wheel drive. This made it quite a pioneer in the crossover segment before the term even existed. For those who adore off-piste adventures, it offers an authentic driving experience!
  • One interesting facet of the Niva is its 4x4 capabilities with a divorced transfer case, allowing for both high and low range. This setup provided impressive off-road prowess that many SUVs from that era couldn't match. It's a slice of Soviet engineering ingenuity, with function taking the spotlight over form.
  • Despite its no-frills nature, the Lada Niva's construction is surprisingly effective—think of it as the Land Rover's Eastern cousin, but with a more affordable flair. Parts like the 4-speed manual transmission and simple carbureted engine were designed to be easily repairable. A project car like this, which has been partially restored, hints at an ongoing relationship between driver and machine.
  • In today's world of high-tech, plush SUVs, the Niva stands out for its pure mechanical interaction. The listing mentions that a tune-up is needed, which could be an exciting weekend endeavor for a hands-on enthusiast. Plus, the plethora of spare parts accompanying the sale adds a treasure trove of possibilities for customization and restoration.
