Description

1968 Audi NSU Ro 80 · Sedan · Driven 24,281 miles I’d like to sell my 1968 NSU Ro 80. This one of the few running and driving examples in the US. Originally sold in Germany and imported to the US some time in the 1970s. It was stored in heated/dry storage from the mid 1980s until 2021. It’s an early production, number 684 of about 37,000 cars made. It has the original Wankel rotary engine. Significant work was done to make the car road worthy again. Our Take:
  • Wankel Rotary Engine Pioneer: The 1968 NSU Ro 80 is a true trailblazer, featuring the avant-garde Wankel rotary engine. Back then, this technology was like bringing sci-fi to life. While the engine gained notoriety for reliability quirks, its smoothness and unique hum won over the brave-hearted. For those enamored with the unconventional, the Ro 80's powerplant offers a peek into a daring era of engineering.
  • Forward-Thinking Design: This car wasn't just ahead of its time under the hood but also in its design. Its sleek, aerodynamic silhouette was revolutionary in the 60s, influencing future designs for decades. It's like the original sketch for modern executive sedans—a real time machine on wheels! Owning an Ro 80 is like having a piece of visual and physical car history parked in your driveway.
  • Rarity and Preservation: Being number 684 out of about 37,000 makes it quite the catch for collectors. After living in storage since the mid-80s, it's a rare gem on American roads today. The mere fact that it runs and drives, with only 24,281 miles on the odometer, is a testament to careful preservation and diligent care over the years. It's not every day you see such a well-kept piece of automotive history.
  • Community and Support: For those who thrive on community and camaraderie, the Ro 80 club in Germany offers a lifeline with parts and advice; it's kind of like having a classic car support group. This network makes owning and maintaining such a rare, historic vehicle a feasible and rewarding endeavor. So, if you enjoy tinkering and are keen on heritage automotive culture, this is your golden ticket!
