Description

Selling my forever fun restomod project 1985 535i. Loss of my job forces me to get rid of it. A lot of stuff I've done to bring this back from extinction, and lots more to be done. I'm the sixth owner of the car, so what I've figured out is this is technically not an iS, but it is functionally more than an 535iS (which started in 1986). I have receipts that date back to the original owner (from Indiana) and there were performance mods made by the dealer early on, including the front valance an...

Our Take:
  • A Blend of Classic and Custom: The 1985 BMW 535i stands out as a classic from the E28 series, known for its blend of robust performance and elegant design. This particular model, enhanced with modifications that mimic the later 535iS, is even more unique. The seller's efforts to retrofit the Limited Slip Differential (LSD) from a 1987 model adds a layer of performance many enthusiasts crave, making it functionally superior to its original form.
  • Historical Upgrades and Dealer Customization: Not just a mere classic, this 535i comes with a history of dealer-installed upgrades, including an early performance package with a front valance and rear wing. These customizations are a nod to the car's rich lineage and add historical intrigue—did you know that BMW was one of the pioneers of integrating sporty elements into sedans in the '80s? The presence of original documentation from the first owner in Indiana adds to its narrative charm.
  • Modern Touches on a Vintage Body: The upgrades include parts borrowed from later models like the E38 and E34, such as 16" wheels and improved braking systems—a testament to the car's evolution over time. This mix of vintage flair and modern reliability with H&R sport springs and Bilstein shocks not only enhances its ride but also highlights a wonderful juxtaposition of old-school charisma and new-age handling.
  • An Enthusiast's Ongoing Project: Despite its age (almost old enough to be a classic rock anthem), this 535i serves as a canvas for continued restoration. The seller's candid account of ongoing repairs and quirks, like the non-functional speedometer and stereo, gives potential buyers a glimpse into the life of a true automotive enthusiast. What better way to connect with history than to literally drive it—and fix it—at the same time?
