Our Take:
  • Model Rarity and Significance: The 1986 Toyota Supra MK3 (MA70) is part of the third generation of Supras, which marked a distinct shift from its predecessor, the Celica. The MK3 introduced a stand-alone Supra model, emphasizing performance and luxury—a direction that would later make the Supra a sports car icon.
  • Engine Specifics and Performance: This particular Supra features the 3.0L 7M-GE inline-six engine, which was known for its smooth power delivery and reliability—though it’s not as coveted as its turbocharged sibling, the 7M-GTE. Despite lacking a turbo, the naturally aspirated 7M-GE in its original form (unmodified, as noted) is respected for its durability, especially since this one has had its head gasket replaced—a common weak point on these engines.
  • Preservation and Authenticity: Having been garage-stored for 18 years, this Supra’s mileage and condition are intriguingly preserved, despite the noted inaccuracies in the odometer reading. The interior and exterior conditions, while not pristine, hint at a life spent out of harsh weather, as seen from the tarp-related scratches rather than rust—a notable selling point for collectors who appreciate originality over restored perfection.
  • Historical Context and Legacy: In the mid-1980s, the Supra represented Toyota's foray into the grand tourer market, where it vied against cars like the Nissan 300ZX and Mazda RX-7. With its blend of sophisticated styling, advanced suspension (TEMs—Toyota Electronically Modulated Suspension was an option back then), and plush interior features, the MK3 helped to cement the Supra’s reputation as a desirable, if understated, sports car of its era.
