Description

1979 Subaru FE Coupe. I listed it as an SVX because Facebook doesn't give an option for this car. I rebuilt the 1600 CC with oversized pistons, ported and polished heads with three-angle cut valves, a balanced rotating mass, a lightened flywheel, a new clutch, and some. I also installed an ultra-rare Subaru Japanese spec twin carb intake manifold. This engine has approximately 50 miles on it but I built it in 1988, same with the paint. Our Take:
  • Rarity and Obscureness: The 1979 Subaru FE Coupe is a bona fide rarity in today's automotive landscape. It was a part of Subaru's push towards fuel efficiency before the brand became synonymous with all-wheel drive and rally success. Its brief production run and the subsequent regulatory issues surrounding emissions mean you won't see one of these at your typical car meet—it's a bit like finding a unicorn in the wild.
  • Historical Significance: The "FE" in Subaru FE Coupe stood for "Fuel Efficient," a concept that was ahead of its time but quickly ran into hurdles due to emissions standards like the NOX limitations. At a time when fuel efficiency was becoming a buzzword, Subaru attempted to marry performance with economy—a precursor to the modern eco-sports car. But the hurdles were too high, and eventually, the model faded into history.
  • Unique Modifications: This particular example is a blend of rare OEM parts and intriguing custom work. The engine's rebuild with oversized pistons and a Japanese spec twin carb intake manifold makes it unique even among its limited peers. Such modifications can be likened to adding a turbocharger to a classic Beetle—unexpected yet delightful for the right enthusiast.
  • Cultural and Enthusiast Appeal: Owned by a longstanding Subaru repair expert, this car was a showpiece—almost like a rolling advertisement for what a Subaru could be. The seller's offer of additional parts cars sweetens the deal for someone dreaming of a restoration or even a hot rod-style STi conversion. It’s not just a car; it’s a slice of automotive legacy with a potential future on the track or in a show.
