Description

Very nice, original Mazda Cosmo (RX-5) Fastback. Complete drivetrain swap from a 1991 naturally aspirated RX-7 FC3S, running a standalone microtech - all done by Kilo Racing in Orlando. Reliable 2 rotor 13B-DEI, Runs and drives great. Not perfect by any means, however a rare opportunity to own an even rarer piece of Japanese "nostalgic" car history. Price is listed at less than half of what I see (albeit cleaner) ones for sale online. Most are available overseas or are imports themselves, this i...

Our Take:
  • Rare Beast in the US: The Mazda Cosmo RX-5 is not a common sight, especially in the U.S. market where it was sold with left-hand drive—a nod to its rarity. While the model had its heart in Japan, it made a subtle mark in the American landscape, often overshadowed by its more famous rotary siblings.
  • Rotary Revolution: The drivetrain swap to a 1991 RX-7's naturally aspirated 13B-DEI engine adds a sprinkle of modern reliability to this classic. With the standalone Microtech system, it borders on both nostalgia and modern tech—something that rotary enthusiasts can appreciate, right?
  • Nostalgic Japanese Design: The RX-5, or “Cosmo” as it's known, embodies that 1970s Japanese fastback style that many automakers experimented with. It's a little piece of design history—complete with those A-pillar mirrors—that illustrates Mazda's commitment to combining aesthetics with performance during that era.
  • Parts Compatibility Jackpot: Given the interchangeability with third-gen RX-7 parts, maintaining and even enhancing this RX-5 should be as easy as pie for rotary fans. It's like having a vintage gem with a modern cheat sheet, making this car a tinkerer's dream.
